Last day of work for 34 Kitchener Schneiders plant employees

Maple Leaf Foods says 34 workers at the Schneider's plant in Kitchener will be taking severance packages on Friday, as the company winds down its operations at the historic plant.

34 employees at the Schneiders plant in Kitchener on Courtland Avenue will be marking their last shift at the plant today.Maple Leaf Foods says the group of workers volunteered to take severance packages, as the company winds down its operations until the plantcloses in December.

Peter Block, the vicepresident of communications at Maple Leaf Foods, says there are about 600 employees still at the plant.

91 of thoseare expected to leave in October and just over 100 will leave in November. The rest will finish their time with the plant in December.

"We are grateful to the employees that are there," said Block. "It's been a great team and we look forward to working with them over the course of the next few months."
