Mayfair Hotel could be demolished as early as Tuesday

The demolition of the former Mayfair Hotel and its neighbour,the former Hymmen Hardware building,could begin as early as Tuesday.

Mike Seiling, the chief building officialfor the City ofKitchener,saidhe hadreceived a demolition plan and he hoped the two buildings would be torn down quickly. However, construction crews will need to prepare the site before demolition can begin.

"There's streetlights that are in the way, there's garbage containers in the way," Seiling said. "Those sorts of things that need to be done inpreparationof starting to remove the first brick off the building."

According to Seiling, demolition will happen "from the top down," beginningwith the former Mayfair Hotel. He said utilities have alreadybeen disconnected from the building in preparation for tearing it down.

Seiling hopes to be able to issue a demolition permit late Friday.
