Former Afghan refugee awarded $50K scholarship at University of Guelph

Nasrin Husseini grew up in Iran, escaped the Taliban and was the first woman to graduate from vet school in Afghanistan after Taliban rule. She came to Canada as a refugee and has now made her way to the University of Guelph.

Becoming a veterinarianwas always in the back of NasrinHusseini's mind. Shegrew up in Iran as a refugee fromAfghanistan and once her family was allowed to go back, shebecame the first womanto graduate from veterinary medicine afterTalibanrule.

Her path has lead her to the University of Guelph as she isone of five people toreceived the inaugural Arrell Food Institute scholarship, worth $50,000, and hopes tohelp transform the global food industry withher research.

"I think I'm in the right field because I always wanted to help somehow the society,"She toldCBC'sThe Morning Editionhost, Craig Norris.

"Research and providing healthier food, I think it's a great thing to do and that's the best way that I can help this beautiful country that in the hardest moments of my life supported me."
