3 Guelph polling stations near university 'overwhelmed' by student voters

Three polling stations near the University of Guelph were"overwhelmed" by student voters late in the day causing delays, an Elections Canada spokesperson says.

RjeanGrenier, a regional media advisor for Elections Canada for Ontario, said hundreds of students lined up at the three polling stations after dinner. Because many are first-time voters, it led to long waits.

The returning officer moved five registration officers to the polling locations to deal with the long lineups.

By 9:30 p.m., Grenier said all voters who were in line were brought inside the building, and the door was locked.

"Those people will be able to vote," he said.

Senior officials with Elections Canada also told CBC News thatGuelph reportedly had other problems,including that staff didn't arrive for shifts in the morning and dropped out as the day went on.

As of 9 p.m., Elections Canada was not extending voting hours anywhere in Ontario; however, Grenier noted people who are in line to vote at 9:30 p.m. when polls closed will still be able to vote.
