Party waste disposal tips for Christmas 2016

Local municipalities are encouraging residents to stay on Santa's nice list by disposing their Christmas waste properly this year.

The City of Guelph posted a press release early Wednesday with a list of holiday waste tips and a link to the city's Sort Right website.

According to the tip list, wrapping paper, paper tubes, tissue paper, cards and gift bags that are not coated in plastic go in the blue bin.

Poinsettias, natural greenery and cooled turkey fat go in the green bin.

Ribbons, bows, foil wrapping paper, plastic wrap and bubble wrap go in the garbage can.

Tree disposal

Guelph residents can dispose of their Christmas trees by bringing them to the Waste Resource Innovation Centre at 110 Dunlop Drive, Gate 3.

A $5 fee will be charged for trees dropped off in December, but trees can be dropped off for free in January.

In Waterloo region, Christmas trees are picked up at the curb during the first two weeks of January, on a resident's regular waste collection day.

To be accepted, trees must not be in their stand or in a bag, cannot be longer than 1.2 meters, and must be free from all ornaments, according to the region's website.
