Guelph Humane Society gets $13.5K for Pets in Transition Program

The Guelph Humane Society has received $13,500 grant from PetSmart for a its new Pets in Transition program.

Few domestic violence shelters allow pets, so the programprovides foster care for the pets of women fleeing abusive situations for up to three months.

"We can help ensure that those leaving domestic violence as well as their pets are kept safe,"LisaVeit, Associate Director, Guelph Humane Society, said in a release.

"The Pets in Transition program helps bring comfort to families by knowing that their pets are well-cared for and loved, so that they can focus on their recovery and healing, with the assurance that they will be re-united once again."

The Guelph Humane Society places the pets with caregivers who have been trained to care for pets who may have experienced violence.

The program also provides pet care items such as food and veterinary care if needed.
