City considering expanding Waterloo Memorial Rec Complex

The City of Waterloo is considering expanding the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex to include a newolder adult centre.

In May 2015, city council approved an older adult recreation strategy, outlining a plan to improve services to this demographic over a five-year period.

The strategy calls for the city to build a new older adult recreational facility in uptown Waterloo, recommendingthe recreation complex as an ideal location, becauseit hasa pool, a track, and is closeto Waterloo Park.

"Thestrategy recommended looking into a new adult centre, primarilybecause our existing centres are older buildings andwe recognized the needs and interest of seniors are changing and those buildings might not meet the needs of future seniors," said BethRajnovich, project manager of the expansion project.

The cityis working on developing a needs assessment report that willidentify what could be included in an addition to the recreation complex.

The report will also consider the possibility of relocatingone or both of the existing older adult centres the Adult Recreation Centre on King Street South and the Rotary Adult Centre onDuttonDrive to the recreation complex.

On Jan. 25, the city will be holding twopublic consultation sessions at the recreation complex to elicit feedback on the possible expansion.

Rajnovich and her team plan to present theneeds assessment report to council in March.
