A fox found in the Wallensteinarea of Wellesley Township has tested positive for rabies, according to Region of Waterloo PublicHealth.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture is following up to confirm that no domestic or farm animals were exposed. Public health believesno people have come into contact with the fox, but they're still investigating.

Earlier this year, two calves and a heifer in the area tested positive for rabies in three different cases.

Rabies is carried in the saliva of an infected animal, like foxes, bats and skunks, and is spread through bites, scratches, cuts or contact with mucus membranes.

To avoid rabies:

  • Make sure your pets have current rabies vaccinations. It's the law in Ontario that all pets over three months old are vaccinated.
  • Stay away from wild animals, dogs or cats you don't know, or animals that are acting strangely.
  • Keep pets away from wildlife, don't let them run freeand keep them indoors at night.
  • Don't feed, transport or relocate wildlife.
  • If you come into contact with an animal that could be rabid, wash the area with soapy water, get medical advice immediately, and contact Region of Waterloo Public Health at 519-575-4400.
