225 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region over weekend

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 118 cases on Saturday and 107 on Sunday.

62 hospitalized with the infection, 27 in intensive care

The region saw 225 new COVID-19 cases logged over the weekend.

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 118 cases on Saturday and 107 on Sunday.

There are 62 people hospitalized with the infection, 27 of which are in intensive care units in the region.

A total of 1,576 variant cases have been logged in the region as of Sunday.Forty-five are confirmed to be the B117 variant first detected in the UK. There was a single case each of the B1351 variant first detected in South Africa, and the P1 variant first found in Brazil.

There are 681 active cases in Waterloo region.

Meanwhile, the province is reporting 3,947 new infections and 24 more COVID-related deaths on Sunday. There are 2,126 people hospitalized across the province with 851 in intensive care.

24 outbreaks

There are 24 active outbreaks in the region including 18 in workplaces.

Those include:

  • One at a food and beverage service with three cases.
  • Four in retail workplaces: Two with two cases each, one with five cases and another with 10 cases.
  • Three at trades and related services: Two with two cases each and another with three cases.
  • Two at auto sales services with three cases each.
  • Two at construction workplaces: One with four cases and another with five cases.
  • Three at manufacturing/industrial workplaces: One with two cases, one with three cases and another with 11 cases.
  • Two at food processing workplaces: One with seven cases and another with 17.
  • One at a financial institution with four cases.

There are two outbreaks at long term care or retirement home facilities.

An outbreak at the Village at University Gates long-term care was declared Saturday with three cases in staff.

Doon Village Retirement Residence also has two positive cases in staff members.

Other outbreaks include:

  • St. Mary's General Hospital (fourth floor).
  • Two at congregate settings with a single case each.
  • One at Willowbrae Academy Cambridge child-care with four cases.

Vaccination update:

More than 25 per cent of the region's population has received at least one dose of vaccine as of Friday.

The region's average number of doses administered per day is steadily increasing. As of Thursday, that number is 4,248 doses per day.

A total of 15,462 doses of vaccine have been administered in pharmacies in the region.
