Flooding in Waterloo region closes roads, highways

As the rain and snow melt continues Wednesday, more and more road closures are in effect in Wilmot, Woolwich, Wellesley townships and in Cambridge.

As the rain and snow melt continuesWednesday, more road closures cause by flooding are in effectin Wilmot, Woolwich, Wellesley townships and in Cambridge.

A rainfall warning is still in effect for Waterloo region and Wellington County. Fiveto 10 mm of rain and possibly freezing rain is expected to fall Wednesdaybefore a cold front passes through the region in the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.

Total rainfall amounts in Waterloo region since Monday night have been between 40and 60 mm, said Environment Canada in a release.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Wednesday issued a flood warningfor:

  • City of Cambridge.
  • Township of NorthDumfries.
  • Brant County.
  • City ofBrantford.

"An ice jam has developed in the City of Brantford through the dike reach," said GRCA in a release."Levels are similar to those experienced during the 1996 ice jam."

Current road closures

Thewarm weatherand snow melt has causedlocalized flooding across Southern Ontario, forcing some local townships and cities to close roads andevacuate residents.

Woolwich:

North Dumfries:

  • Main Street between Scott & Hall streets are closed.
  • Thomson Street at InglisStreet remains closed. The southbound lane of Blair Roadby Langdon Road is closed.
  • Public Works crews are dropping off sand andsandbags at the Ayr Community Centre west parking lot.

Wilmot:

Wellington:

  • Wellington Road 18, between Salem and 8th line remains closed.
  • Sideroad 6 between Second Line and Fourth Line is closeddue to flooding and road conditions.

Wellesley:

  • In Wellesley,Seignor Line and Manser Road between Deborah Glaister and Perth Line 7 remains closed.

Cambridge:

GRCAsaid an ice jam upstream ofParkhillDam released at approximately 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, causingflooding in the Grand River between Cambridge andBrantford, similar to flood levels experienced in June of 2017.

As a result, Highway 24from Myers Road to Ainslie Street remainsclosed.
