Two men seriously injured after being struck by Waterloo Regional Police cruiser: SIU

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) says two people were seriously injured in a collision with a policeofficerearly Saturday morning.

Officers were called to the area of King StreetNorth and Hickory Streetjust after 3 a.m. for a report of an altercation involving gun shots.

While responding to the scene, police say one officer was involved in a collision and two people were injured.

WRPShas notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is now looking into the crash.

According to the SIU, two men were in the middle of King Street when they were struck by a police cruiser.

A 26-year-old man is now in intensive care at Hamilton General Hospital, while a 22 year-old-man was taken to a Kitchener hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU says four investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.

The SIU investigates cases involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
