Several community mailboxeswere broken into and mail may have been stolen inWaterloo Regionand Wellington Countyover the weekend, police say.

In Centre Wellington Township, OPP say the main door of "numerous" community mailboxes, orsuperboxes, had been pried open onJan. 31,allowing someone access to the mail inside.

In some cases, there had been a failedattemptto open the superboxes, "which resulted in the main door being bent outward and deep gouges on the outside of themailbox, below the main door," police said in anews release.

The superboxes were on six different streets in Centre Wellington TownshipsaidConst.Cheri Rockefeller, but she wasn't able to say how many people were affected by the thefts, or how much mail was stolen.

Rockefeller said other police services in Waterloo Region and the City of Guelphreported similar incidents.

InGuelph, a community mailbox onSerenaLane was reported broken into on Feb. 1.

A tool was used to open the main door, and because it happened sometime over the weekend,it's not clear if any mail was stolen, Guelph PoliceConst. MikeGatto said.

Rockefeller said the incidents are of particular interest to police because in 2014, a Fergus man was arrested after community mailboxes were broken into inthe City of Guelph, Guelph-Eramosa Township and Centre Wellington Township. He was charged withpossession of property obtained by crime (both over and under $5,000), resisting arrestandmischief.
