Uber could become legal in the region by the summer

The Region of Waterloo has taken another step forward in making Uber legal, as councillors ask the residents what they think should be included in a new bylaw to regulate the popular ride-hailing service.

Some councillors say lack of bylaw for Uber is unfair and unsafe

Council says members could vote on a new plan for Uber as early as June.

The Region of Waterloo has taken another step forward in the process tomakeUber legal.

Councillors voted Tuesday to ask members of thepublic what they think should be included in a new bylaw that would regulate the popular ride-hailing service.

"They're operating illegally and they've not following any of the rules that taxies have to right now," said Regional Coun. Jane Mitchell."That puts taxis and limousines at a disadvantage."

Mitchell chairs the group responsible for licensing. She said she's anxious to level the playing field, not just for those directly competing for business, but for passengers too.

"It's a concern for safety to the public and for consumer protection," she said.

According to Mitchell, Uber is one of the most controversial issues they have ever dealt with, "right up there" with the smoking bylaw and the decision about the LRT.

The public input meetings are scheduled for March 29 and April 5.

Anyone is allowed to present, if they call ahead.

Council will use the feedback to create the new bylaw.

They plan to vote oit in June.
