Registration for remote learning in the Upper Grand District School Board opened Thursday.

Families of students in elementary school have until June 3 at 4 p.m. to decide if they will opt for virtual learning in the fallwhile high school students have until early August to make up their minds.

In a news release Thursday, the school board said remote learning in 2021-2022 would not be the same as in years past.

Students enrolled in remote classes will have their own dedicated teachers and will not be placed in hybrid classrooms, where some students are learning in-person and others online.

Both synchronous and asychronous schooling will be offered to remote learners, said the school board. The decision would be for the entire school year.

Remote French Immersion not guaranteed

The board says the remote learning classes will not be as extensive this fall.

"With more students expected to return to in-person learning, our ability tooffer a similar breadth of remote programs as was offered during the 2020-2021 schoolmay be limited," said the school board. Specifically, it said French immersion could not be guaranteed for remote learners at the elementary level.

While registration for remote learning also opened on Thursday for secondary school students, no details were provided by the school board about what online classes will look like for 2021-2022. It did say more detailed information would be provided to families in July and that the registration deadline for those students is early August.
