A potential snowy weekend means the Victoria Street bridge demolition will be postponed.

The decision was made Thursday morning after Ministry of Transportation staff looked at the forecast and saw the chance of flurries for the whole weekend.

"We will share the new schedule once it's available," Liane Fisher Bloxam, the communications co-ordinator for the ministry's west region office, said in an email to CBC News.

The bridge is scheduled to come down and reconstructed as part of ongoing work on the new Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph.

When it is demolished, that part of the Conestoga Parkway will be closed to through traffic for about 24 hours. Traffic will be detoured southbound traffic will be rerouted onto the Wellington Street off-ramp up to Shirley Avenue and then to Bingemans Centre Drive while northbound traffic will be rerouted on the Bruce Street off ramp to Frederick Street then to Edna Street.

The OPP will be there to help guide motorists and major traffic delays are expected.

The Victoria Street bridge will be closed until November.
