Waterloo city councillors have approved an amendment to their official plan that would allow for the construction of a 24-storey building on the corner of King Street N. and Bridgeport Road E.

The development at 70 King St. N., where a former post office currently stands, would include two condo towers and one "podium" with the following heights:

  • 23-metre, four-storey podium of non-residential spaceadjacent toKing Street
  • 81-metre, 24-storey condo toweradjacent to Regina Street
  • 46-metre, 11-storey condo tower adjacent toKing Street

According to a summary of the Sept. 10 council meeting, the amendment "allows for a taller podium, to create a landmark building base that facilitates community use with higher floor to ceiling heights."

The developers have said they intend to use the podium space for a community science centre.

The summary statement also indicates the condo towers will contain a maximum of 321 units, which is 31 units more than what the developers suggested in April, when they proposed 290 units.

Now that the city has approved the the development, it must ask the Region of Waterloo to approve its amendment.
