Hamoon Derafshipour will be competing with his life partner and coach Samira Malekipour by his side, a dream they longed for.

A couple from Waterloo is heading to the Olympics this summer to compete in karate.

Hamoon Derafshipour will be competing with his life partner and coach Samira Malekipourby his side, a dream they longed for.

Originally from Iran, Derafshipour will compete under the IOC flag which is the International Olympic Committee. He's waiting to receive Canadian citizenship and hopes to represent Team Canada in the future.

For now, he and his coach are focused on their first match in August.

CBC Kitchener-Waterloo caught up with the pair at Driftwood Martial Arts, where they often train.
