Waterloo council approves funds for rec centre expansion design

Waterloo City Council has approved the release of $2.1 million to pursue the design and planning for the expansion of the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Centre.

Waterloo City Council has approved the release of $2.1 million to pursue the design and planning for the expansion of the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

The city will put out a request for proposals to conduct the work in the next two to three weeks, project manager Beth Rajnovichtold CBCNews.

The detailed design drawings and construction plans are expected to be back beforecouncilfor review and approval in about a year, said Rajnovich.

The proposed WMRC expansion includes:

  • An addition on the east side of the complex including a gymnasium, more lobby space, change rooms, locker, storage and office spaces.
  • A repurposed Hauser Haus for a central fitness centre and an indoor walking concourse.
  • Improvedaccessibility.
  • New facilities and improved parking specifically for older adults.

Construction, if approved, should take 24 months to complete with a planned opening in the Spring or Summer of 2021.
