High school fight involving N-word and administrator's response under review: School board

A fight between two high school students that involved racially motivated language and a school administrator's reaction to it are under review, the Waterloo Region District School Board says.

Audio of a student speaking to an administrator was posted online and sent to CBC Kitchener-Waterloo. In the recording, a student speaks to an administrator about another student using the N-word.

The person who posted the video identified one of the people as a school administrator at Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School. CBC K-W has not been able to confirm the identities of those speaking in the video.

The exchange posted online appears to have been edited. In it, the student explains they feel another student's use of the N-word is "really provoking and really serious."

The person identified as an administrator agrees, saying they are taking it seriously, but that person also tells the student, "You've got to let it go."

Investigation into fight and response

Alana Russell,chief communications officer for the Waterloo Region District School Board, says the board is aware of the video.

"We are conducting an investigation both into the incident itself, which was an altercation between two students and had some offensive language exchanged, but also into the actions of the school administrator to determine whether or not the response was an appropriate one," she said.

The investigation comes after two students at Huron Heights Secondary School in Kitchener were suspended for racist social media posts.

Police have said those students won't face criminal charges. The WRDSB has not said if or when the students will be allowed back to school.
