Waterloo region loses bid to host 2021 Canada Summer Games

Waterloo region lost its bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games.

Waterloo region has lost its bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games.

Niagara was named the winning community Thursday during an announcement in Toronto.Ottawa and Sudbury were also in the running for the games.

Advocates had said the games would bring tourism to the region.

Olympic boxer Mandy Bujoldsaid she was disappointed but it wasn't a complete loss.

"It was still a win for us in the sense that we were able to collaborate and now we have all this researchdone on our facilities," she said. "There's going to be some disappointment right now, but I think at the end of the day ... we're still closer as a region, showing that we can work together if we need to work together for a bigger goal."

The evaluation committee noticed the enthusiasm of the people in Waterloo region.

"I think we have everything it takes to really host an amazing games," she said.

When the region can make a bid to host again, Bujold said she hopes they do.

"I really do think that we would be a great host for the Canada Games," she said.

Those in Waterloo region were good sports about losing to Niagara region.
