98 new cases of COVID-19, 1 death reported in Waterloo region on Monday

There were 98 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Waterloo region on Monday and one death. That brings the seven-day rolling average to 63 cases.

16 active outbreaks, 24 people hospitalized

There were 98 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Waterloo region on Monday, the most new cases in a single day since the end of January.

That brings the seven-day rolling average to 63. The seven-day average indicates the current trend and smoothes out single day increases and decreases.

There was one death of a person with the virus reported Monday, bringing the total number of COVID-related deaths in the region to 245.

Since the start of the pandemic 12,704people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 11,918cases have been marked as resolved.

Public health reported 527 active cases on Monday. The number of people hospitalized grew by six overnight, bringing the number to 24people. Of the 24 people in hospital, 10 are in theintensive care unit.

The region also reported 828 cases to have screened positive for a variant of concern. Of those screened 40 were confirmed as the B117 variant, first identified in the United Kingdom.

Ontario saw4,401 new COVID-19 cases with near record-high positive tests on Monday.

16active outbreaks

There were 16active outbreaks including three school outbreaks.They include:

  • Waterloo Collegiate Institute with two cases.
  • Holy Rosary Catholic Elementary School with two cases.
  • St. Luke Catholic Elementary School with two cases.

There are three outbreaks atlicensed child-care settings. They include:

  • Elite Day Care with two outbreaks.One outbreak has two cases, one has four cases.
  • YMCA Brigadoon with 5 cases.

Other outbreaks include:

  • One at a congregate setting with one case.
  • One at the University of Waterloo with 38cases.
  • One at a manufacturing workplace with seven cases.
  • Two at construction sites: One with six cases, one with three cases.
  • One at an optometrist officewith three cases.
  • One at a place of worship with two cases.
  • One at a food processingfacility with three cases.
  • One at a trades and related services business with two cases.
  • One at a food and beverage service with three cases.
