134 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region Tuesday

Public health reported 134 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, making the number of cases this month the third highest so far in the pandemic.

Active cases rise to 679, 27 outbreaks reported

There were 134 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Waterloo region on Tuesday.

Public health confirmed those were new, recent cases and not the result of a data from previous days.

It brought the total number of cases in April to 1,480. That's the third highest total number of cases reported in a month, following January when there were 3,356 cases and December with2,313 cases.

It's also more than the sum of all cases from March 2020 to the end of August 2020 combined which was 1,453.

There have been 13,430 cases of the virus since the first case in Waterloo region on March 5, 2020.

Of those, 12,485 have been marked as resolved.

Public health reported 679 active cases as of Tuesday, a rise from 608 on Monday.

There were also 43 people in hospital and 21 people in the local intensive care units.

There were no new deaths reported Tuesday.

Ontario reported3,469 more cases of COVID-19 and 22 more deaths from the illness on Tuesday.

45 new variant cases

The number of cases that have screened positive for a variant of concern in the region rose to 1,225 on Tuesday,up from 1,180 on Monday.

There are 40 cases confirmed to be the B117 variant, which was first detected in the U.K.

There is a single case each confirmed for two other variants: the B1351 first detected in South Africa and the P1 variant first found in Brazil.

27 active outbreaks

There were 27 active outbreaks in the region including one at a long-term care home where two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.

There are seven outbreaks in schools, including:

  • St. Bernadette Catholic School in Kitchener with three cases.
  • St. Anne Catholic Elementary Schoolin Cambridge with three cases.
  • Highland Public School in Cambridge with three cases.
  • St. John's Kilmarnock School in Breslau with two cases.
  • Queensmount Public Schoolin Kitchener with two cases.
  • Sunnyside Public School in Kitchener with two cases.
  • cole secondaire catholique Pre-Ren-de-Galinein Cambridge with two cases.

There were 14 workplace outbreaks (a rise from 10 on Monday). They include:

  • Three in manufacturing workplaces: One with nine cases, one with three cases and one with two cases.
  • Two at food processors: One with 12 cases, one with six cases.
  • Two at trades businesses: One with three cases, one with two cases.
  • One at a retail store with five cases.
  • One at a construction site with four cases.
  • One at a financial institution with three cases.
  • One at a food and beverage business with three cases.
  • One at an automobile sales and service business with two cases.
  • One at a trucking company with two cases.
  • One in a general office setting with two cases.

The other outbreaks include:

  • Three in congregate settings: One with four cases, two with a single case each.
  • One at YMCA Brigadoon child care with six cases.
  • One at St. Mary's General Hospital.
