11 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region Monday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, a drop from the weekend when 22 cases were reported on Saturday and 25 were reported on Sunday.

The new cases bring the total number of cases so far in August to 404. Thatfar exceedsthe total number of cases seen last August, when there were 68 cases. At that time, the second wave had not yet hit.

For June, July and August of 2020, a total of 348 cases were reported.

For June, July and so far in August of this year, there have been a total of 2,758 cases.

There were no new deaths of people with the virus reported on Monday. The total number of COVID-related deaths remained at 288.

There were 14 people infectious with COVID-19 in the region's three hospitals. There were eight people in the intensive care unit. People in the ICU may not be infectious with COVID-19 anymore, but they do still require specialized care.

A spokesperson at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener confirmed that while the U.S. has seen a rise in children being admitted to hospital,there are nopediatric patients with COVID-19 at this time in Kitchener.

There were six active outbreaks in the region:

• Two in child care: One at a home child care centre with two cases, one at Rising Oaks Early Learning with two cases.
• One at Nazarene Christian Congregation in Kitchener with 30 cases.
• One at a food processor with 10 cases.
• One at Conestoga Lodge retirement home with eight cases: One in a staff member, seven in non-staff members.
• One at a security firm with two cases.

In terms of vaccinations, the region reported on Monday that 84.95 per cent of eligible people aged 12 and up in the community have one dose while 77.4 per cent have both doses.
