166 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region, no new deaths

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 166 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. There were no new deaths reported, but there are 35 people in regional hospitals with 18 people in the intensive care unit.

There were 166 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region on Thursday.

That broughtthe total number of cases reported so far in January 2,057 and since last March to 7,956.

There were no new deaths reported. The current number of local deaths related to virus sits at 179.

Region of Waterloo Public Health also reported there were 1,092 active cases of the virus in the community. There were 35 people in hospital with 18 people in the intensive care unit; however, some of those patients were people who have been moved to the region from hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area.

Ontario reported another 3,326 cases of COVID-19 and 62 more deaths of people with the illness Thursday, the same day new stay-at-home orders took effect.

42 active outbreaks

There were 42 active outbreaks in the region, which included18 at long-term care or retirement homes.

There are seven outbreaks at congregate settings including: One with 19 cases, one with 13 cases, one with eight cases and four with a single case at each.

An outbreak at Conestoga Meats rose to 91 cases.

Other outbreaks were:

  • Five are at manufacturing workplaces: One with 20 cases, one with 11 cases, one with six cases, one with three cases and one with two cases.
  • Three at food and beverage services: One with four cases, one with three cases and one with two cases.
  • One at a farm with four cases.
  • One at Waterloo Regional Police Service's north division with three cases.
  • One at Region of Waterloo Paramedics north division with three cases.
  • One at a vehicle sales workplace with three cases.
  • One at a retail store with two cases.
  • One at a trades workplace with two cases.
  • One at Grand River Hospital in the mental health unit.
  • One at Shamrock Independent Living Centre in Kitchener where one staff member has tested positive.
