65% of people 12 and older now fully vaccinated in Waterloo region

Sixty-five per cent of people aged 12 and up have now been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in Waterloo region.

That's up fromFriday's numbers, when the region reported 62.82 per cent of peopleaged 12 and up had been fully vaccinated.

That news comes a day after the lowest number of vaccines were given since May, with 3,047 doses administered on Sunday. The lowest day prior to Sunday was May 24 with 2,662.

The region reports 81.43 per cent of people have had their first dose of the vaccine.

Officials in Waterloo region have said they may start winding down mass vaccination sites in the near future. Shirley Hilton, deputy chief with the Waterloo Regional Police Service and head of the region's vaccine distribution task force, says they will evaluate this week whether the clinics are busy enough to warrant keeping them open.

"We will continue to focus on seconddoses as quickly as possible. As more residents receive their second doses, we will begin to ramp down clinics while increasing opportunities for mobile vaccine options," she said during a media briefing on Friday.

The region is now offering walk-in appointments for both first and second doses. As well, a vaccination bus is going to high-priority neighbourhoods to offer people the shot or answer questions.

11 new cases

There were 11 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region on Monday.

It comes after just nine cases were reported on Sunday, the first time the daily case count had been in single digits since October.

There were no new deaths reported on Monday.

There were 143 active cases in the region and 16 people infectious with COVID-19 in the region's three hospitals, a rise of three cases from the previous day. As well, 11 people were listed as being in the intensive care unit. Some of those patients may no longer be infectious with COVID-19, but still need specialized care as they recover from the virus.

There were eight active outbreaks:

• Workplaces: Three.
• Hospitals: Two.
• Child care/summer camp: Two.
• Congregate setting: One.
