44 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Waterloo region Thursday

There are 44 new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Thursday, public health reports. There are 18 outbreaks with 270 active cases.

18 outbreaks, 270 active cases and 5 people in hospital

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 44 new cases of COVID-19 in the community on Thursday.

That brings the total in November to 378 and the total since March to 2,532.

Of the total number of cases, 2,141 or 85 per cent are considered resolved.

There are 270 active cases in the region with five people listed as being in hospital. The number of COVID-related deaths remains unchanged at 121.

Ontario reported another 1,575 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, a third straight record-high day for the province.

18 active outbreaks

There are 18 active outbreaks in Waterloo region. A new one has been declared at Pinehaven long-term care home in Waterloo where one person who works there has tested positive for the virus.

Cases linked to an outbreak at Kitchener restaurantAlgarve Restaurant has grown by one to 11.Public health says as many as 175 people who went to the restaurant betweenOct.28 to Nov.4 may have been exposedto COVID-19.

The other 16 outbreaks are:

  • Aside from the new outbreak at Pinehaven, there are four outbreaks in long-term care and retirement homes. In each facility, a single staff member has tested positive for COVID-19. No one living in the homes has tested positive for the virus.
  • Two outbreaks are in congregate settings, for example group homes. There are two cases at one location and one case at another location.
  • One outbreak has been linked to a wedding with 24 cases. Public health has said the majority of people connected to this outbreak do not live in the region.
  • One is in a manufacturing workplace with nine cases.
  • One outbreak at the University of Waterloo with four cases. At least two cases are people living on campus.
  • One outbreak is at a food processing workplace with four cases.
  • One outbreak is in a general office setting with four cases.
  • One outbreakat a food and beverage workplacewith three cases. Public health has not released the name of this business and won't unless there is concern the virus may have been spread to the public.
  • Two outbreaks havebeen declared at trades and related services businesses. Both outbreaks havetwo cases.
  • One outbreak has been declared at Avenue Road Public School in Cambridge where there are two cases.
  • One outbreak is at a before and after school program where there is one case.
