WRPS now investigating Cambridge toddler's death as suspicious

The Waterloo Regional Police Service says it is now investigating the death of a two-year-old Cambridge boy as suspicious, after the toddler died earlier this week.

Coroner's office still determining how the boy died

Police initially responded to a medical call from a home on Winter Court on Dec. 1, shortly after noon, but the boy was pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived, say WRPS.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service says it is now investigating the death of a two-year-old Cambridge boy as suspicious, but cause of death is still being investigated by the Ontario coroner's office.

Police initially responded to a medical call from a home on Winter Court on Dec. 1, shortly after noon, said spokesperson Cherri Greeno. Officers arrived to find a boy, 2, in the home, who was pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived.

"Since that time, as the investigation continued, detectives from our Major Crimes Unit have been assisting the coroner's office with its death investigation," said Greeno.

The Major Crimes Unit is mandated by the province to investigate any time a child under the age of five dies.

The Ontario Coroner's office is still determine exactly how the child died but in the meantime his death is now being treated as suspicious, said Greeno.

"So we are in the area today, and there will be an increased police presence in that area as officers continue to gather evidence."

Winter Court is a small cul-de-sac with just a few duplexes near Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

Greeno asks anyone with information that might be relevant to their investigation to contact WRPS or Crime Stoppers.
