Another inmate dies at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre

Ontario's Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has confirmed that an inmate from theElgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) died on Saturday.

Ontario's Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has confirmed that an inmate from theElgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) died on Saturday.

In an email to CBC News, Greg Flood, aspokesperson for the ministry,said the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell.

"Staff responded, immediately performing first aid and calling paramedics. The inmate was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced [dead]," Flood wrote.

This is the 15thinmate death at the EMDC in the past decade.

Steve Moerman, the acting superintendent ofMiddlesex-London EMS, says paramedics responded to two separate callsconcerning two different inmates at EMDCon Saturday.

"One male in his 20s was in critical condition and one male in his 50swasin stable condition," he said. "Both were transported to the London Health Sciences Centre."

EMS was unable to confirm what prompted each call.

In his email, Flood added that a number of investigations are underway to determine the cause and the manner of death of the inmate.
