Teen charged in St. Thomas high school assault

A 15-year-old St. Thomas, Ont. student was arrested Tuesday after a violent altercation at a local high school south of London.

The victim was treated in hospital for minor injuries

A 15-year-old St. Thomas, Ont. student was arrested Tuesday after a violent altercation at a local high schoolsouth of London.

At 11:30 a.m. ET, St. Thomas police responded to reports from school staff of violence between two individuals. One victim was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries, police said.

The 15-year-old was charged with assault. The identity of the teen is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police said the youth wastaken to St. Thomas Police Service (STPS) headquartersand later released on an undertaking with a future court date.

The incident is the third instance of high school violence to occur in St. Thomas since the start of the school year.

On Sept. 6, police were called by the parent of a 16-year-old victim reporting that theteen had been assaulted on school property by a former acquaintance. The victim was treated for minor injuries and a concussion.

A 16-year-old was charged with one count ofassault.

St. Thomas police are also investigating an allegeassault at a local high school on Sept. 12. They were made aware of the alleged violence between two students while at the school on an unrelated call for service, police said.

STPS chief Marc Roskampwas unable to provide a direct statement to CBC News on the matter of school violence following Tuesday'sarrest, however, he reiterated his support for the return of police officers in schools.
