14 Manitoba nods for Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards

Manitoba artists have netted 14 nominations for the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards (APCMA) this year.

Manitoba artistshave netted 14 nominations for theAboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards(APCMA) this year. The nominees were announced at a press conference on June 19 at Portage Place.

The winners will be revealed at the ninthannual gala awards show at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg onSeptember 12, 2014and the invite-only Ohshkii Awards Night at the Winnipeg Art Gallery onSeptember 11.

Vince Fontaine'sIndian Citylanded four nominations for its second album,Colors. The band is up for Best Pop CD, Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year, Best Album Cover Design, and Best Producer/Engineer.

Singer/songwriter and MCLeonard Sumnerlanded two nominations, including Best Folk/Acoustic CD for his debut,Rez Poetry, and Best New Artist. Sumner, who performed a song at the nominee announcement, won the Winnipeg Arts Council's On The Rise Award earlier this month. This is his first nominationfor a music awards show.

Also up for twoawards is country chanteuseDesiree Dorion, including Single of the Year for hersong "Turn To Me" and Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year for "Mama Got A Shotgun". Both songs are off her albumSmall Town Stories, which is up for a 2014 Western Canadian Music Award and picked up a nod from The 2014 JUNO Awards.

Hip hop outfitWinnipeg Boyzis another double nominee, picking up nods for Best Group or Duo and Best Rap/Hip Hop CD forAb Initio.
Indian City has four nominations for its second album, Colors.


Other homegrown talent up for awards this year include: Nelson Little for Best Country CD, Jason Lepine for Best Fiddle CD, Jody Thomas Gaskin for Best Flute CD, and Moodie X 2 for Best Pop CD.

The APCMAs take place during the annualManito Ahbee Festival, whichrunsSeptember 10-14, 2014in Winnipeg. The awards gala will be broadcast on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
