What to know about the Lagimodire riding for Manitoba's 2023 election

This will be the second election for the southeast Winnipeg riding of Lagimodire, which was created in the 2018 riding redistribution.

This will be the second election for the southeast Winnipeg riding of Lagimodire, which was created in the 2018 riding redistribution.

Lagimodire was created to accommodate significant growth in Sage Creek, the Manitoba Electoral Boundaries Commission said. It was formerly the southern part of the Southdale riding, which had experienced considerable population growth.

The riding runs from Abinojii Mikanah (formerly Bishop Grandin Boulevard) along a Manitoba Hydro corridor in the north to city limits in the south. Its western boundary is St. Anne's Road and the Seine River and its eastern boundary is Plessis Road.

The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Island Lakes and Sage Creek.

The riding's population is 25,790, says the province'sElections Manitoba's riding profile (compiled with data from the 2021 census).

The median age of the riding is slightly older than the Manitoba median, at 39.6 compared to 38.4 provincewide, the riding profilesays.Themedian household income in the area is $114,000, according to the 2021 census.

Voting history

This will be the second election in the riding. In 2019, incumbent Andrew Smithwon the seat for the Progressive Conservatives.

As of Sept. 11, the nominated candidates for the 2023 electionare:

  • Tyler Blashko (NDP).
  • Walt Nilsson (Liberal).
  • Andrew Smith (Progressive Conservative incumbent).

Candidates become official when they meet criteria set out in the province's Elections Act, including providing a statement of disclosure, after the election has been called. In Lagimodire, all candidates are official.
