A Winnipeg family whose son was murdered is giving a city school division thousands of dollars to fund programming to keep students away from illegal drugs.

Floyd Wiebe's 20-year-old son, T.J., was murdered in 2003. He had been involved in the illegal drug trade.

After his son's death, Wiebe set up a fund in T.J.'s name to raise money for drug education.

Agala eventin May brought in $54,000 more than double the amountWiebe expected for the Louis Riel School Division, where T.J. attended school.

The money will be used by students who want to put on plays or create videos to educate their peers about drugs, Wiebe said.

"We feel that kids are the ones that get kids to try drugs, and therefore kids are also the most powerful to advise against doing drugs," he said.

Wiebe is already planning next year's event. He hopes to set up similar education programs in school divisions across Manitoba.
