7 candidates make Winnipeg mayoral ballot, 3 fall short

Thought about running in Winnipeg's civic election, but didn't get around to registering? You're out of luck now, as the nomination deadline has just passed.

Candidates for mayor, councillors and school trustees had until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to submit their paperwork with the city clerk's office if they want to get on the ballot.

The city clerk's office now begins the process of writing up the ballots for the 2014 civic election, set for Oct. 22.

Twomayoral hopefuls, MikeVogiatzakis and Hazem Aslan,made it to the clerk's office at the last minute, but they were deemed not eligible.

Buck Duchene, who jumped into the race just 10 days earlier, also failed to get on the official nomination list.

Vogiatzakiswas 58 eligible signatures short in his nomination papers, whileAslan was short 95 signatures.Eachneeded 250 signatures from registered voters.

Vogiatzakis told CBC News he'svery disappointed in the outcome, especially sincehe already had 2,000 signsprinted.He said he is thinking about hiringa lawyer to contest the city clerk's decision.

"They said they're not on the voters' list and that's pretty amazing. This is bureaucracy at its best," he said.

"These are people that are all over the age of 18.They live in our city. They have homes in our city or businesses in our city."

CBC News had a look at who signed the nomination forms for the various candidates for mayor.

Paula Havixbeck managed to score the signature of Mayor Sam Katz on her papers and a number of her colleagues on city council also signed.

Judy Wasylycia-Leis got nominated by more than a dozen prominent NDP members including Premier Greg Selinger'schief of staff and a couple of cabinet ministers.

As for the council races, all the city's wards have more than one candidate nominated.

The contest in the Transcona ward changed on Tuesday, when incumbent Russ Wyatt decided to seek re-election just days after announcing that he would not run again so he could focus on entering federal politics.

Candidates needed the signatures of 25 registered voters to run for council and 250 signatures to run for mayor.

While the nomination deadline has passed, officials say candidates have until Wednesday to withdraw if they change their minds.
