The death of a seal at Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo has animal welfare critics calling for a full review of zoo operations.

A harbour seal died Tuesday after getting caught in an underwater drain.

It's the second animal death at the zoo in recent months.

In September, a tiger was mauled by another tiger.

Julie Woodyer of Zoocheck, a national animal protection charity based in Toronto, said Winnipeg's zoo should welcome a review.

Baikal, a 19-year-old male Amur tiger, was killed after entering another tiger enclosure in September. Zoocheck also called for a review of Assiniboine Park Zoo at the time. (Ian Dealey)
"I don't think the zoo should be intimidated at all about doing an independent review which, if they're doing a great job, will reveal they're doing a great job," she said.

It's the second time Zoocheck has called for a second set of eyes on Winnipeg's zoo.

The new zoo has also had problems after wolves dug out out of their enclosure and polar bears chewed through silicone in the swimming tunnel.
