Bombers' fan vows to change his name to Mr. Grey Cup

A Winnipeg man says he's such a big fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, he'll change his name to "Grey Cup" if the team wins this year's CFL championship.

After the Winnipeg team's loss to the Toronto Argonauts last weekend, Tim Volk said he was beginning to question his lifelong devotion to the Blue and Gold.

But the 24-year-old University of Winnipeg student saw something early this week that changed his mind.

"I read an article on the Blue Bombers website that [said] only 11,000 people had actually purchased playoff tickets, and it really, really made me mad," he told CBC News on Wednesday morning.

"Isaid Iguess I'd show all the fans what it really means to be a fan."

If the Bombers win the Cup on Nov. 25, Volk said, he will march down to the Vital Statistics office and change his name the very next day.

"If I have kids one day, they'll definitely be named the Cups.They'll be the Cups one day," Volk said.

"It's a way to kick-start the Bombers and hopefully they can use this as a motivation to show that the fans do care and we want them to be successful."

Volk said he has already looked into what would be required for him to make the name change legal, and he has discovered the new name would be legitimate.

"I can actually change it to 'Grey Cup.' They would have no problem with that," he said.

His familyincluding histwin brother doesn't know what to make of his pledge, he said.

"They think I'm an idiot, right, but they know it's not just for fun," he said."They can still call me Tim, but I will be known as Grey Cup."

Should the team finish in first place in their division during the regular season, the Bombers will host the CFL East Division final on Nov. 18. A second-place finish would mean the football club would play host to the CFL East semifinal on Nov. 11.
