A man has been charged with offences including assault with a weapon and forcible confinement after a woman who is now in hospital was held captive for two days, Brandon police say.

Police got a report on Tuesday just after 6:30 p.m. that the woman was in hospital afterescaping"two days of assault, threats and forcible confinement," the Brandon Police Service said in a news release on Wednesday.

The 38-year-oldwoman was held at a home on Eighth Street near Van Horne Avenue, police said. A 44-year-old man was later arrested at his home, and the woman's property, which police said had been taken away, was recovered when the man was arrested.

A Brandon police spokesperson later said the man and woman know each other, and that the man "became angry and violent" when the woman went to his home on Saturday, blaming her for lost money he couldn't find.

The woman tried to escape, but was forced back. She was finally able to get out when the man went upstairs at one point.

While he chased the woman and caught her outside, "thankfully citizens were around and heard her scream for help," the spokesperson said in an email.

The man is also charged with assault, uttering threats, robbery and failure to comply with a release order, police said.

A police spokesperson said the man is being held in custody. He's scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 30, 2025.
