Shooting suspect confesses in Brandon church, gets arrested

Police nabbed a shooting suspect at a Brandon church Saturday night after he reportedly confessed his sins to a worker and tried to hide.

Police nabbed a shooting suspect at a Brandon church Saturday night after he reportedly confessed his sins to a worker and tried to hide.

Police were called at about 5:40 p.m. CTto the 300 block of 10th Street after reports of a gunshot and an altercation between two men.

Officers arrived and taped off the scene but didn't find either of the two men in the area,Brandonpolice Sgt. LarryYanick said.

Police then received a call from the local hospital about a 38-year-oldman who was receiving emergency treatment forasingle gunshot wound to his torso.

Not long after that call, another call came in, this time from someone at achurch on 8th Street, Yanick said.

"A man came in and said he was hiding from police because he had shot someone," Yanick said, adding police went down to the church and arrested a 24-year-oldman without incident.

"We have reason to believe he wasresponsible for the shooting."

A small-calibre bullet was extracted from the victim's torso, Yanick said, adding the injury is not considered life-threatening. He was expected to be released from hospital Saturday night.

The shooting wasn't random and police believe the two men know each other.

The suspect is facing weapons-related charges. The investigation continues.
