CentreVenture names Angela Mathieson as new CEO

Angela Mathieson is the new president and CEO ofCentreVenture, downtown Winnipegs development agency.

She takes overfrom Ross McGowan who retired earlier this month.

Angela Mathieson has long been respected in Winnipeg for her work in urban and economic development and I amvery pleased she will lead CentreVenture into the next generation of partnerships and opportunities to continue the revitalization of our citysdowntown, Mayor Brian Bowman stated in a news release.

We are pleased to welcome Angela, who was selected after a comprehensive search process conducted by acommittee of the board, CurtVossen,CentreVenturesboard chair added.

Angela is familiar with thebusiness and achievements ofCentreVentureand we are confident that with herbackground and experience she will be able to leadCentreVentureas we continue tocreate a strong and vibrant downtown. We lookforward to working with her.

CentreVentures mandate is to stimulate downtown revitalization by creating an environment for private sector businesses and government to work together and topromote the downtown to investors, businesses and residents.

Theagency has, in recent years, bought upproperty in the downtown, including St. Regis Hotel and Carlton Inn, two businesses that had been magnets for public displays of intoxication, gambling and panhandling.

It has since closeddown the St. Regis beer vendor and VLTs and is continuing to operate it as a long-stay hotel. The Carltonhas been demolished and anew hotel complex is currently in the planning process.

Other projects include:

  • Working on a plan to redevelopthe long-shuttered James Avenue pumping station property.
  • Construction of the20-storey, 154-room hotel complex across from the MTS Centre.
  • Creation of the SHED (sports, hospitality and entertainment district) in downtown.
