Cigarette butt leads to house fire on Winnipeg's Maryland Street

A fire that started on abalcony damaged a Maryland Street home but didn't result in any injuries, the City of Winnipeg says.

Fire crews responded to a small blaze at a two-and-a-half-storey house on Maryland, between Sargent and Ellice avenues, just before 3 p.m.Friday, the city said in a news release.

Crews found smoke coming from the balcony at the rear of the house when they arrived. The fire was declared under control less than 15 minutes later.

All occupants of the house were able to get out before fire crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

Preliminary investigation suggests the fire was caused by improper disposal of a cigarette butt, the city's news release said.

No damage estimates are known at this time.
