Winnipeggers could see special constables on public transit buses next year, according to a report.

The city's Enhancing Public Safety on Transit report recommends hiring six special constables, at a cost ofmore than $500,000 a year, and post themon routes plagued with violence against drivers and other riders.

We do have very good numbers about what routes and what times of day [most incidents happen],so I think you really can target this a bit," said Coun. Brian Mayes, whohas been fighting for such a move since he was elected in November 2011.

Mayes says the recommendation in the report calls on the provinceto pay for half to cost.

The recommendation muststillget through the budget process for next yearbefore it can even be considered for approval by council.
