Man dead, another injured in multi-vehicle crash on Perimeter Highway

One man is dead and another is injured after a crash involving multiple vehicles, includinga driver reportedly going the wrong way down the north Perimeter HighwayTuesday night.

Multiple vehicles crashed, closing a section of the north Perimeter Highway early into Wednesday morning. The highway reopened but a 78-year-old man died in the crash, RCMP said. (CBC)

One man is dead and another is injured after a crash involving multiple vehicles, includinga driver reportedly going the wrong way down the north Perimeter HighwayTuesday night.

RCMP were called at 11:40 p.m. abouta vehicle going the wrong way on the Perimeter nearMcPhillips Street.

A short-time later, officers found a seriouscrash involving several vehicles a few kilometres from there on the Perimeter Highway bridge over the Red River near Main Street.

Investigators believe a vehicle driven by a 78-year-old Winnipeg man was headed eastbound in the westbound lane. His vehiclecollided with a westbound vehicle that was driven by a 21-year-old Stony Mountain man, police said. Those vehicles also collided with a westbound semi-trailer. .

The 78-year-old was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 21-year-old was also taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said, and the 41-year-old Winnipeg man driving the semiwas uninjured.

The highway was closed for hours but reopened before rush hour Wednesday morning.

RCMP continue to investigate.
