A man found guilty of running a prostitution ring with underage girls and making child pornography has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, minus the time he has already served behind bars.

"Boiled right down, it was all simply about him.His fun, his business, his money, his sexual desires, his need for notoriety," said Justice Chris Martin, as he handed down the sentence Friday afternoon.

Darrell Ackman was convicted of 14 charges earlier this month, stemming from incidents involving seven victims, five of whom were underage.

Having already spentfour years and four months in custody,Ackmanwill spend the next10 years and eight months in prison.

Justice Martin said the sentence should send a strong message and "recognizes the egregious moral blameworthiness for the repeated criminal behaviour of Mr.Ackmaninvolving multiplevictims."

"The fact that he was then 41 and all of his victims were 18 years or younger does not demonstrate, as Mr. Ackman would have it, that he was too carefree and trusting, but rather highlights that he could care less about them or what they did," Justice Martin said.

"He played fast and loose with these girls' lives, and the escort ruse."

Crown prosecutor Jennifer Mann wasseeking a sentence of 20 years, while Ackman's defence attorney wasasking for a sentence of sevento 10 years.

Two of the victims killed themselves after being exploited, but the judge said there is no evidence to link the suicides to Ackman. But the sister of one of the victims said she blames him, at least partly, for her sister's suicide.

"I know she would be happy if she was here, I miss hera lot, I am just happy this is over and done with," she said."She is with me right now, always with me"

She said she can't really let go of what happened to her sister.

"It will always bethere," she said."At least he (Ackman) is paying for it, he is going to have to live with that everyday of his life."

She doesn't think Ackman will change his ways.

"Even when I was reading my victim impact statement, there was no remorse in his eyes, no nothing. He won't be rehabilitated.," she said.

Ackman will be on the sex offender registry for life and hemust provide a dna sample.

There were other restrictions placed on him:

  • Prohibited from owning or possessing weapons for 10 years after his release.
  • Prohibited from dealing with person under 16 years old for 15 years following release.
  • Cannot communicate with any victims.
