David Woodbury elected NDP president

Delegates at the NDP convention have elected David Woodbury as president of the party.

Ovide Mercredi announced he was stepping down at age 72

David Woodbury has been elected president of the provincial NDP after serving for several years as an associate deputy minister responsible for the Treasury Board.

Delegates at the NDP convention have elected David Woodbury aspresident of the party.

Woodbury replaces Ovide Mercredi in the role as head of the party's executive.

Mecredi said earlier in the day it was time for him to step down andfor new people to take us into the future.

Woodbury was an associate deputy minister responsible for the TreasuryBoard for several years of NDP government.

He's also held positions in the party's provincial council.

Woodbury beat out Zita Somakoko.
