Design for 1919 Winnipeg General Strike monument revealed

A new monument to commemorate the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike will go up at Lily Street and Market Avenue this summer.

The City of Winnipeg held a competition to design the monument. On Monday, Monteyne Architecture was announced the winner.

According to the firm, "It is a monument made primarily of weathering steel and multiple, conflicting meanings. The archetypal struggle for a fair deal that gripped the city almost 100 years ago mirrored the clash between classes and values that was occurring in other places, and the various oppositions that existed then continue to dominate our political and social discourse to this day."

The design competition allotted up to $250,000 for the winning design.

H5 Architecture and Unit 7 Architecture placed as finalists in the competition.
