Manitoba's 2nd digital mammography unit to be unveiled in Winnipeg

New technology to detect breast cancer is coming to Winnipeg, with Manitoba health officials set to show off the province's second digital mammography machine at Health Sciences Centre this morning.

Health Minister Sharon Blady and other officials will be on hand as the mammography unit is installed at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

A demonstration of the equipment and the radiology suite will follow the installation.

The new technology first came to Brandon Regional Hospital last month,with the official unveiling taking place there Sept. 18.

With digital mammography, images are viewed on a workstation monitor and stored electronically rather than transferred to film.

Blady has said that images captured in one region will be available to radiologists working in another, helping speed up turnaround times and diagnoses, whichmay lead to faster treatment if needed.

The ministersaid the province is investing as much as $25 million in digital mammography services across the province. Other sites will receive the technology in the coming months.
