1 dead after crash involving 3 pickup trucks and semi-trailer on Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway

A multi-vehiclecrash at the eastern edge of Winnipeg claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injuredon Tuesday.

A multi-vehiclecrash at the eastern edge of Winnipeg claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injuredon Tuesday.

Three pickup trucks were heading weston Dugald Road when one hit another, causing a chain reaction around 12:30 a.m., police say.

The contact between the two trucks caused the driver of the first truck to losecontrol and veerto the right,hittingthe side of a semi-trailer at the intersection of Dugald and the Perimeter Highway, according to RCMP. The semiwas stopped for a red light in the southbound lane of the Perimeter Highway.

Meanwhile, the pickup truck that was initially hitthencollided with the third pickup truck. Bothwentthrough the intersection and ended up on thewest side of the Perimeter Highway, RCMP said in a news release.

The man driving the pickup that hit the semi was pronounced deadat the scene.

The driver of the second pickup was rushed tohospital in Winnipeg with serious injuries. The driver of the third pickup was treated and released on scene.

The pickups were all driven by men in their 20s, the RCMP said. The 69-year-old man who was driving the semi was not injured.

Brian Seaton, fire chief for the Rural Municipality of Springfield, which borders the city, told CBC News hiscrews were called about a pickup truck that was on fire with someone trapped inside.

When they arrived, crews from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were there and had started to extinguish the flames.

The Springfield crews took over the scene, shutting down roads as collision analysts examined the scene and debris scattered across the area was cleared away.

The roads reopenedaround 8 a.m.

RCMP are still investigating and have not announced if any charges will be laid.
