Flood watch issued for western Manitoba

The provincial government has issued a flood watch for western Manitoba.

Manitoba's department of water stewardship said Tuesday evening that a slow-moving storm is developing over Montana and could bring up to 75 millimetres of rain Wednesday night through Thursday in western parts of the province.

The flood watch includes the watersheds of the Assiniboine, Swan and Red Deer rivers, the department said.

It also includes streams in the Interlake and in the Riding, Duck and Porcupine mountain regions.

Significant rain is also expected in southern Manitoba along the Red River watershed.

That could cause more overland flooding in southern Manitoba as well, just about two weeks after a deluge of rain caused massive property damage in the region over a two-day period.

The province estimated the damage from that storm will exceed $1 million, not including devastation to homes and businesses caused by sewage backup.
