Fonzie gets key to the city

The Fonz is coming to Winnipeg and getting the key to the city.

The Fonz is coming to Winnipeg and getting the key to the city.

Henry Winkler, who played Arthur 'Fonzie' Fonzarelli from the long-running TV series, Happy Days, will be in the city for the 36th annual World of Wheels car show.

The show runs all weekend at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, starting Friday evening, and Winkler is one of the featured celebrities on hand to sign autographs.

Catherine Bach, who played Daisy Duke on the TV show, Dukes of Hazzard, will also be there.

On Sunday, Mayor Sam Katz will meet with Winkler at the car show and present the symbolic key the city's highest honour.

A press release from the City of Winnipeg states Winkler is being honoured for his work as a strong advocate for education and literacy.

Having grown up with undiagnosed dyslexia, he has become a celebrated children's author "and a source of inspiration for children facing a learning disability," the release states.

Happy Days was a hugely popular sitcom that was on TV from 1974-84. Set in the 1950s, it featured Winkler as a cool greaser who wore white T-shirts and a leather jacket, and was able to turn things with a snap of his fingers.

He joins the likes of CFL star Milt Stegall, musician and humanitarian Sir Bob Geldof, and Olympian Jon Montgomery in getting the key to the city.
