Former Manitoba senators Sharon Carstairs and Rod Zimmer under scrutiny

The files of two well-known Manitoba senators are being handed over to the RCMP as part of a sweeping look at senate expenses by auditor general Michael Ferguson.

CBC has confirmed retired Liberal senators from ManitobaSharon Carstairs and Rod Zimmerwill have their files turned over to the RCMPin a sweeping examination of senate expenses.

The report by auditor general Michael Fergusonfound 21 senators had made questionable expense claims.

Nine, including Carstairs and Zimmer, were deemed serious enough to have their files given to the RCMP for furtherinvestigation.

Carstairs, who has been critical of the senate expense scandalsaying Prime MinisterStephen Harperhadno one to blame but himself for it, finds herself now caught up in it.

Carstairswas appointed to the senate byformer Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

Zimmer was appointed by Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Both are retired.
