Fort Rouge neighbourhood reeling from murder

While Winnipeg police search for a killer, some Fort Rouge residents are still in shock after a shooting in their neighbourhood this week.

While Winnipeg police search for a killer, some Fort Rouge residents are still in shock after a shooting in their neighbourhood this week.

On Monday night, 24-year-old Kevin Tokarchuk was found in his garage on Churchill Drive with a gunshot wound to his head.

People who live near the murder site, such as next door neighbour Asa Nodleman, say they can't believe what happened.

"I was a little surprised," said a shocked Nodleman. "I didn't know how to react yesterday and I don't know how to react today."

Kevin Tokarchuk graduated from Kelvin High School. In 1999 he attended Red River College where he completed a course to teach shop to high school kids. Police say he has no criminal record and doesn't belong to any gangs.

Elmer Merritt lives across the back lane from the Tokarchuks. He says he hopes the neighbourhood will heal from this tragedy.

"I would expect that like everything else it will pass over and will be a bad memory within a few weeks or months."

Police say the killing may be retribution for a murder that happened one year ago.

On May 12, 2002 known gang member Trevor Savoie was murdered and Tokarchuk's brother Daniel has been charged with the crime.

A preliminary hearing for that case is scheduled for mid December.
